LA DOLCE VITA
(1960, Italy/France, 174 min., 35mm, Eng. subs) Federico Fellini
Journalist and man-about-town Marcello struggles to find his place in the world, torn between the allure of Rome’s elite social scene and the stifling domesticity offered by his girlfriend, all the while searching for a way to become a serious writer.
Ciao bella! Steeped in sexy upper-class malaise, Federico Fellini’s LA DOLCE VITA is a timelessly fashionable odyssey through the life of a tabloid reporter. The handsome Marcello Mastroianni stars alongside the fantastic Anita Ekberg as he pushes his way through a life of gossip, lies, ghosts, and dancing. The film’s beautiful widescreen composition warrants coming to see it on the big screen, especially as a lovely English sub-titled 35mm print as does Nino Rota’s incomparable score! Nominated for four Academy Awards upon its release, the film transformed Fellini’s oeuvre into that of legacy, and was such a huge success it allowed him the creative freedom to make 8½. Fun Fact: LA DOLCE VITA invented the word “paparazzi.” How so? You’ll just have to come and find out for yourself!
